What is Rhino JavaScript Java Library?

Rhino JavaScript Java Library is an open-source implementation of JavaScript written entirely in Java. It is typically embedded into Java applications to provide scripting to end users.

Rhino JavaScript Java Library is embedded only in Java SE 6 and 7 as the default Java scripting engine.

  • Java SE 8 - Default JavaScript Engine is Nashorn.
  • Java SE 7 - Default JavaScript Engine is Rhino.
  • Java SE 6 - Default JavaScript Engine is Rhino.
  • Java SE 5 and older - No support of JavaScript Engine.

The current version of Rhino is 1.7 with the following features:

  • Rhino supports the Implementation of Javascript 1.7.
  • Rhino supports the Implementation of ECMA 262, a general-purpose cross platform scripting language standard.
  • Rhino supports the Implementation of ECMA 357, xml scripting.
  • Rhino provides a Javascript Shell.
  • Rhino provides a Javascript compiler.
  • Rhino provides a Javascript Debugger.
  • Rhino can be run on Apache Jakarta Bean Scripting Framework (BSF)
